The Donkey Sanctuary
was founded in 1992. The donkeys come from the circus, retiring farmers or even from traditional carnival. Old donkeys are used as food for the circus carnivores like lions. The trick is a trade they can’t refuse. Slaughter-leftovers are bought at the abattoir and traded for the donkey who will live happily ever after in 'Refugio dos Burros'.
Not only donkeys, but also horses, mules, cats and dogs which are found abandoned hungry, wounded and left to die find a place here.
When the animals enter the Donkey Sanctuary they all need a complete health check.
All this costs lots of money so donations are very welcome!
You can also financial adopt a dog, cat or donkey.
